Guide / fill delivery

Fill Dirt Planning Guide

Plan quantity, intended use, access, unloading, compaction, and documentation before requesting fill delivery.

Fill delivery works best when the receiving project can explain its intended use and conditions. Start with the area, volume basis, specification, access, unloading method, and schedule.

Measure the receiving area

Record length, width, and depth, then convert the dimensions into cubic yards. For irregular areas, separate the site into manageable sections and identify the basis of each estimate.

Define use and requirements

Explain the intended use, required specification, compaction expectations, and any plans or reports. Do not assume all fill is structural fill or that a material description establishes suitability.

Plan access and placement

Confirm truck access, unloading location, staged delivery windows, equipment needs, and who handles spreading or compaction. Documentation or testing coordination may be needed when applicable.

Questions contractors ask

Is all fill dirt interchangeable?

No. Intended use, project requirements, material condition, documentation, and receiving-site approval determine whether a material can be considered.

Can fill delivery include spreading?

Do not assume it does. Request placement, grading, or compaction support separately so responsibilities are clear.
