Calculator / volume planning
Dirt Volume Calculator
Estimate cubic feet and cubic yards from length, width, and depth before you plan hauling or fill delivery.
Use this quick calculator to turn basic dimensions into a starting volume. Add an optional allowance for planning, then review the volume basis before using it for truck quantities.
Volume formula
Cubic feet = length × width × depth. Cubic yards = cubic feet ÷ 27. For depth in inches, convert inches to feet first by dividing by 12.
Use the result carefully
Excavation volume does not always equal hauled loose volume. Bank volume, loose volume, compacted volume, moisture, material type, bulking or swell, and field conditions can change actual truck quantities.
Questions contractors ask
Can I calculate more than one area?
Run the calculator for each area and add the results. For irregular work, divide the footprint into simpler sections and document the assumptions.
Should I add an allowance?
An allowance can support early planning, but identify it separately from the measured volume and confirm quantities against plans or field records.
